Cathy Williams has been the General Manager of the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre for over 15 years.
She has seen the centre grow from a small hospital that handled some cancer patients, to one of the largest and best cancer centres in the United Kingdom. It is now unique in that it is the ONLY NHS hospital to have the new Accuray CyberKnife, a linear accelerator mounted on a robotic arm, capable of very accurate radiation dosages from a multitude of angles, even to moving targets, like the lungs. The patient experience is also greatly improved. More of that later.
Cathy and the Cancer Centre have been closely allied with The Community Voice over all these years.

The latest tool in the treatment of cancerous tumours is the Cyber Knife.
The nine linear accelerators now in use at the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre, though efficient, cannot perform to the specification of the Cyber Knife. The ‘Knife’ can access the target tumour from a variety of angles by moving all round the patient and applying the necessary dosage of radiation with the greatest accuracy.
As usual Dr. Edwin Aird’s master class presentation to the Community Voice was received with great acclaim.

What an inspiration he is! Mike Turner at ninety years old is still influential in many spheres, not least in The Community Voice, which he founded some twenty years ago. Now its Life President, after many years as Chairman, he is regarded there with affection and awe. His astute questioning and wide knowledge continue to guide its affairs, an active elder statesman par excellence. At its meeting in February 2010 his special birthday was celebrated with a token gift, a framed photograph of himself, to convey members’ good wishes for many happy and vigorous years ahead. This tough old campaigner still packs a punch - and is still young at heart!
