Dr Tony Stern, who runs the Carepoint Practice at theNorthwood Health Centre, says phone consultations are not a replacement for face-to-face advice. But  they give patients more choice and meant patients did not have to travel to the surgery.

With the current economic climate adding to the woes of the nation, people are increasingly reluctant to be seen to be taking time off work, particularly those with long-term health problems. Phone consultations are a great way to make sure that patients can access their GP without compromising their situation.

The phone-a-doctor scheme has already been used by patients suffering from work-related stress.

It is part of a Government drive to improve patient access to GP services.

Dr Stern  still offers face to face consultations but increasing numbers of his patients found the phone service quicker and more convenient. Many patients prefer phone consultations over face to face as it is quick, convenient and can be conducted anywhere.

The advantages are that it cuts out having to make a trip to the surgery, particularly if you are elderly or disabled, offers instant reassurance and means you can take the call anywhere, at home, work, even on holiday if you have a pressing problem that can't wait.

The Mount Vernon Treatment Centre was officially opened on Friday 13th July 2009. A commemorative plaque marking the event was unveiled by Anthony Valentine JP,  the Chairman of Hillingdon Hospital NHS Trust from April 2006 to July 2009.  A number of key people involved with the financing, design, construction and building of the centre, including clinicians, nurses and friends of Mount Vernon were invited to the event. It was a very happy occasion.
Part one deals with the unveiling of the plaque and part two has short interviews with people of note.

On Sunday the 5th of April 2009, tours of the Treatment Centre were arranged for invited groups of people who had an association with the hospital. Naturally, members of The Community Voice were invited and about 20 members attended. The manager of Mount Vernon Hospital, Karen Blackbond, gave me a special tour, after the other groups had finished , so we could have a seamless and uncluttered access to all areas. I hope you find the resulting video worthwhile and enlightening.

On Friday 5th December 2008, we were privileged to be guided around Hillingdon Hospital's Bevan Ward by Marie Batey, Director of  Nursing & Patient Experience. Everyone already knew a lot about this 24-bed ward, each bed in its own room with its own en suite facilities. This "Blog" has several reports about it, as well as a short film, but seeing is believing and everyone could still hardly believe their eyes! Some people suggested that patients won't want to go home!

No one wants to be ill, but if illness comes it is a great blessing to have comfortable surroundings. The first patients will move in from Fleming Ward in mid-January, allowing that ward to be refurbished. Their responses to all the new facilities will be carefully monitored, so that the patient's perspective can be incoporated into the underlying research. Ultimately, patients all over the country will benefit from the outcome of this wonderful project.
