The two Herts PCTs are amalgamating into NHS Hertfordshire on 1st April.
At its final Board Meeting in public, it was uncertain whether West Herts PCT will balance its books before its demise. However, it was on track to meet its 2009-10 infections targets. At that meeting it agreed to close the Hemel Hempstead Birth Unit, which was recommended by an independent report, but strongly opposed by the public.
West Herts Hospital Trust Board heard that its Maternity Unit had been highly commended following a recent inspection and that the Trust has achieved almost all its clinical targets for the year, although both A&E and waiting times had dipped below target due to the bad weather. It was also good news that the Trust was on target to achieve a financial surplus of £5.2m by year end, which would eliminate its historic debt – it hopes next year to repay the loan for its recently opened Acute Admissions Unit.
Board members visiting various parts of the hospital and talking to staff learned of the problems caused when staff leave, because they give only one month’s notice but it takes two to three months or more to appoint replacements. This staffing “gap” is causing concern, but will now be addressed.
Thanks to David Hall who reported on both these Board Meetings in public
