Focus on Eyes
Our April guest speaker, Mr Nick Lee, Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Hillingdon Hospital, spoke about age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Little can be done about dry AMD, but sometimes this develops into wet AMD which can be treated very effectively - but only if it is addressed quickly. Wet AMD causes very swift deterioration and even a few days delay can cause serious sight damage.
The speaker urged everyone over 50 to have regular sight tests and to seek help if there is an empty or blurred patch, or distortion of straight lines, in the central field of vision.
Reading in good light and using brown or yellow sunglasses (not blue) offers some protection from AMD. AMD patients can be helped with magnifiers, electronic aids, talking books and newspapers, vitamin supplements and fish oils (approved by NHS Hillingdon, but not by all PCTs), and the Macular Degeneration Society is a valuable resource too.
The DVD of Mr. Nick Lee's presentation with questions and answers, is available, on loan, to members of Community Voice, from Joan Davis 01895 636095
