An interesting start to the meeting! In the initial ‘questions from the public’ period, someone asked about the composition of a panel investigating the quality of services offered to mental health patients. The questioner had spotted that the panel included someone who was employed by the trust that provided the service! It was agreed by the Board that this should not be allowed to happen.
The Primary Care Trust has a financial problem, because the number of patients being seen in hospital was considerably above the numbers expected in the ‘service level agreement’. The reason for this increase in numbers is not known. There are to be negotiations involving the PCT and the North West London Hospitals to resolve these issues.
There was an interesting and informative document outlining the procedures in place for dealing with major incidents, should there be any. The procedures described are very thorough and there are test exercises to ensure that staff are properly aware of what is to be done in such an emergency.
We were also told about changes in the way services will be commissioned in future, largely by combining the work of several PCTs into a single organisation, giving a better organisation at lower cost.
