NHS Harrow
9 December 2009
The agenda was the biggest ever, somewhat over 1000 pages.
We were told a little about the system of ‘demand management’. There have been problems with numbers of patients attending NWLH facilities, for reasons that are not understood. The PCT has to learn from what works and what doesn’t.
There was a mention of the improvement in cervical screening services. In the past the NHS expectation was that women could expect results of tests within 6 weeks but in 2006-7 only 74% of SHAs achieved that. Reorganisation of the service at NWLH as a national pilot site showed that 95% of women could receive results within 2 weeks and 50% had their results within 1 week. A big and welcomed improvement
Finance The overuse at NWLH is a problem. The figures are being disputed and there is an arbitration process about this. This will affect the end-of-year figures. It is still expected that the PCT will break even but the SHA ‘control total’, of a £1M surplus is unlikely to be reached. The provision of continuing care is good.
The Annual Health Report was interesting and had a lot of useful information.
