Annual Health Check Ratings for 2008-2009
All the representatives indicated that their Trusts are working hard either to improve or to maintain their current ratings. They outlined the difficulties that restrict their options, which they are trying to overcome. Little emerged that has not previously been reported. However, in commenting on CN&WL’s reduced rating for quality of care, from Excellent last year to Good recently, the representative accepted that some members of staff have not been able to provide acceptable care and there have been problems with delayed transfer of patients into the community. She noted that the Trust was trying to recruit, but when a post was advertised recently although 242 applications were received, only two of these met the Trust’s required level of expertise in English and Mathematics – she observed that the entry requirements to the profession appear to be too low. Later the Committee focused on stroke care and it identified better public awareness as a key factor in better outcomes for stroke victims – as far too many patients delay seeking medical help. I was present only as an observer, but the Chairman invited my comments and I noted that The Community Voice always stresses the importance of both recognising the key signs of a stroke and taking swift action to dial 999 for help. The Chairman, Cllr. Mary O’Connor, responded with a fulsome tribute and thanks for our work! Representatives: NHS Hillingdon was represented by its Chief Executive, Yi Mien Koh, supported by Dr Tony Grewal from the Local Medical Committee. The Hillingdon Hospital NHS Trust was represented by Jacqueline Totterdel, Director of Operations. Royal Brompton & Harefield Foundation Trust was represented by its Director of Finance, Mark Lambert, and Head of Performance, Richard Connell. Central & North West London Foundation Trust was represented by Noreen Rice, Service Manager at the Riverside Centre (which is sited in Hillingdon Hospital)
