Dr Tony Stern, Northwood Health Centre, hit the headlines recently with his pioneering work undertaking consultations with patients by telephone. The process is simple. The patient ’phones the surgery’s receptionist and books an appointment within two hours. The doctor, with full access to the patient’s records, will phone back, ask and answer questions, write prescriptions and when necessary book a face to face interview. However many consultations are completed satisfactorily without a visit to the surgery. Patients love it!

Dr Stern sees huge potential for tele-medicine in primary care. It is fascinating to hear him speak about his vision for the future. He has agreed to be a guest speaker at a meeting of The Community Voice later in the year – so we have a treat in store.
