Early days: The Community Voice was set up in 1990 to link local people with Mount Vernon Hospital, after a successful campaign against its closure, but our activities widened over time so that we now monitor all nearby hospitals and primary care services, three Primary Care Trusts and two Strategic Health Authorities. Other campaigns included our King’s Fund 1996 project, which led to a consultation network that is still invaluable today. Our 1998 plastic surgery campaign overturned the proposal to move these services to Chelsea & Westminster Hospital and, as a result, Mount Vernon still provides plastic surgery in 2009.
Good cancer services have always been our concern. We raised over 70,000 signatures in 2003 and 77,000 signatures in 2007 to support keeping the Cancer Centre at Mount Vernon, which we presented to Ministers for Health. In 2010, the future of the Cancer Centre is now safe and we rejoice!
More recently we have campaigned against Foundation Trust Hospital Boards meeting only in private. We designed and distributed a poster as part of our campaign to promote take-up of Attendance Allowance. We campaign for retention and development of health centres in Harrow and Hillingdon. Our interests are wide, responding to the concerns of our members..
